In a tragic incident just north of Valley, a bicyclist who died on Sunday after being struck by a motor vehicle has been identified as 47-year-old Dr. Matthew Latacha from Omaha.

Dr. Latacha was a cardiologist and electrophysiologist with Methodist Physicians Clinic. He has been part of the Methodist Health System medical staff since 2009.

According to reports, Dr. Latacha was declared deceased at the location of the crash near 252nd Street and Rainwood Road, as confirmed by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. The driver of the vehicle emerged from the incident unharmed.

According to investigators, it has been determined that both Dr. Latacha and the motor vehicle were travelling in a southbound direction on 252nd Street. The vehicle collided with Dr. Latacha’s bicycle from behind, causing significant damage. Subsequently, the vehicle veered off the road and entered the west ditch.

Deputies and members of the Valley Fire Department were seen engaging in a valiant effort to administer lifesaving measures on the cyclist.

“He {Dr. Latacha} was well respected, admired and loved by patients, colleagues and staff,” Methodist officials said in a statement release. “We know that he has touched the lives of literally thousands of patients through his clinical and surgical practices. Our prayers go out to his wife, Kim, and their children.”
