Logano, the son of Deborah B. and Thomas J. Logano, was born in Middletown, Connecticut. His father comes from an Italian family.
In addition to racing, he also participated in ice hockey as a kid. In only his third Nationwide Series appearance of the 2008 season, Logano earned his first significant NASCAR victory at Kentucky Speedway during the Meijer 300.
At 18 years and 21 days old, he set a new record for the youngest driver to win a Nationwide Series race. Casey Atwood, who was 18 years, 313 days old in 1999, was the previous youngest.
When Logano won the 2009 Lenox Industrial Tools 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway at the age of 19 years, and 35 days, he set a new record for the youngest Cup Series victor ever. Kyle Busch, who was 20 years, and 125 days old in 2005, was the previous youngest.

When he was 6 years old, Connecticut-based quarter-midget racer Logano started his racing career. He won the Jr. Stock Car Division of the Eastern Grand National Championship for the first time in 1997.
He then won the Jr. Honda Division Championship in 1998, and the Lt. Mod. Division Championship in the early part of 1999. Later in 1999, Logano triumphed in Sr. Stock, Lt. Mod, and Lt. B divisions, taking home three New England Regional Championships.
When racing returned to Rockingham Raceway on May 4, 2008, Logano made his ARCA RE/MAX Series debut with Venturini Racing by winning the Carolina 500. Logano started sixth and finished 26th in the Mountain Dew 250 at Talladega, where he also made his NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series debut.
In an effort to win the race in January 2008, Logano crashed into Peyton Sellers in an unsportsmanlike manner, which resulted in his disqualification.
Logano had previously won the Toyota All-Star Showdown championship in the 2007 season. In addition to being disqualified, Logano was given the distinction of having completed exactly 0 laps of the race.
