Merrilee Rush was born Merrilee Gunst in Seattle, Washington on the 26th of January 1944. her parents are Reuben and Edith Gunst. She had siblings Cheryl, Marsha, Laura, and Clayton.

Her father was a homebuilder and the family often moved around including in some of the homes he built. From an early age, she started taking piano lessons and went on to further her education in music.
