Target Clothing Returns Policy (2023 Policy)
When you first walk through the doors at Target. You may feel like you are met with an entire wall and what feels like half the store floors’ worth of clothing. And then some!
When it comes to clothes, Target has it all. Therefore, it’s common to get over-excited and buy a whole bunch of clothing without even trying them on. As everyone knows, the aircon is not even on in the changing rooms, and it can get too hot and sticky in there to take the effort to try anything on.
But what do you do with all these extra clothes? The ones that you bought but don’t fit or you don’t like when you finally try them on? Well, let’s take an in-depth look at the Target Clothing Returns Policy to find out.

Changed Your Mind On Your Purchases From Target?
If you have changed your mind on some or even all of your clothing purchases from Target, that’s not going to be a problem. You can easily return them to the store within three months or 90 days after you buy them.
You will need to ensure they have the tags still attached and the receipt showing proof of purchase. It turns out you can also return clothes that don’t have tags, and sometimes even without a receipt! I’ll touch on these details and more a bit further on.
And if you buy your clothes with Target’s Redcard, you get an extra 30 days to return them, as stated on their website.

Are Target Clothes Sustainable?
Target does pretty well compared to other large multi-chain stores when it comes to going green. They already have a large selection of their products and some clothes that fit in with the guidelines of sustainability.
For example, they have in-house collections where the fabrics are made from recycled polyester and other eco-friendly materials.
Sourcing 100% sustainable cotton!
Moreover, Target has been quoted explaining their projections of ‘sourcing 100% sustainable cotton for our Owned Brand and exclusive National Brands products by this year, 2023!’ Which is exciting news! They hope to be leaders in eco-friendly and sustainable change in bigger companies, showing that it’s not too late to go green and that it can also be done economically.
Target Clothing Returns Policy
Thankfully it’s a super simple process. All you need to do is bring the items and the original receipt (or another valid proof of purchase) to the Guest Services Desk. There, the associate will process your refund back to the original form of payment.
So if you paid by cash, that’s how you’ll get it back, and if you paid via a debit or credit card or Targets Redcard, then it will get returned to the card.
Can I Return Clothes I Bought From Target Online?
Yes, absolutely. It doesn’t matter where you bought the clothes, either from the online shop or even another target location. You can return them to any target store if you have the receipt or barcode for a refund within the 90 days.
If you’ve bought items online, you can use the receipt, the confirmation email, or the barcode found in the target app for proof of purchase.
It won’t cost you a cent!
Alternatively, you can return your unwanted purchase by mail. It’s as easy as logging into your Target account, finding the correct order of which you would like to return, and printing out a shipping label. The Best part? Your Return shipping is free!
Can I Return Clothes Without A Receipt?
Yes, you can, as long as you adhere to these rules:
- The items must be returned within the 90-day window (add an extra 30 days if you purchased via your Target Redcard).
- They were purchased with a credit or debit card, Discover card, Target Redcard or a Target gift card, a personal check, or online. Target employees can trace these payments within their system and get the return completed for you.
- The clothes still have their tags.
What If I Paid With Cash But Lost My Receipt?
If you paid with cash, and cannot find the receipt, then it’s also untraceable within Target’s system. Therefore you won’t receive a standard return and your cash back.
Instead, in some instances, they will put the value of the return onto a ‘merchandise return card.’ This acts like a cash card and can only be used in Targets stores and not online. Not the ideal option, but certainly better than being stuck with clothes that you don’t like or don’t fit.
Can I Return Clothes If My 90-Day Window Has Expired?
Thankfully, there is a couple of ways to get around this issue. The first is if you bought your clothes with Target’s Redcard. You have 120 days to return the unwanted items, not just 90 days.
The second is if the clothing items are from one of Target’s own brand clothing collections, then you have a whole year to return these. So I would advise you to always check the labels of your return items to check if they fall into this category. Plus, it is always handy to check your receipt as it’ll say the actual return date for the items on it.
Targets In House clothing brands include:
- A New Day
- All In Motion
- Art Class
- Auden
- AVA & VIV
- Cat & Jack
- Closie
- Goodfellow & Co
- Joy Lab
- Kona Sol
- Knox Rose

- Xhilaration
Can I Return Clothes If I’ve Already Worn Them?
Target guarantees its clothes to be damage and fault-free. So, if you’ve worn something only to find out the stitches have ripped, or it has a hole in it. You can return the item for a refund or exchange. Again you will need to have proof of purchase and to be in the standard 90-day window unless bought with a Redcard or it’s one of Target’s own brand items.
What Clothes Can’t I Return?
There are a few clothing items that once you’ve purchased, you cannot return. These are things like swimwear and underwear that have packaging, tags, and/or gusset stickers removed. This is entirely for hygienic reasons. Other non-returnable clothes include some seasonal and limited collection items.
Things To Remember When Returning Items
You have a standard 90 days for all unwanted items that you return in unworn, tip-top condition with tags and proof of purchase.
- Add another 30 days to this if you’ve paid for your clothes with a Target Redcard.
- Make it an entire year if it’s an item designed and made by one of Target’s Own Brands.
- If the item is damaged or faulty, you can return it for an exchange or refund, even if you’ve worn it.
- If you don’t have the original receipt but have another proof of purchase like a barcode or confirmation email, you’ll be able to get a refund for the unwanted items.
- And, as always, be kind and courteous to your server! They are helping you get your money back from unwanted items. Sometimes, it will take a bit of time to pull up the correct information if you fail to produce the original receipt. So be patient and smile, and it will make the whole process run far more smoothly.
Unhappy With Your Purchase From Target?
No problem, just make sure to find out about the return policies beforehand, such as the Target Diaper Return Policy if you’re expecting a new baby soon, as well as the Target Return Policy After 90 Days, and if you’re as forgetful as me, you’ll need to find out what the Target Return Policy Without Receipt is?
